Birdwatching in Andalucia

Andalucia is a great place for anyone interested in wildlife and there are hundreds of interesting bird species that can be seen in the region.

The famous flamingos are a spectacular sight and can be observed at the Fuente de Piedra only an hour away. Breeding season starts in February and litterally thousands of flamingos can be seen from observation stations or whilst walking around the lake. Other birds that may be spotted here include Common Sandpiper, Coot, Common Snipe, Lapwing and several Teal and Black Winged Stilt.

Another favourite place is El Torcal, home to the Golden Eagle and the truly impressive Griffon Vulture, and this too is located near to Antequerra. There is a short walk well worth taking to admire the classic Jurassic limestone features, and hopefully spot some wildlife. On one occassion we witnessed a few vultures carefully forcing an injured Spanish ibex from the mountain side.

Finca La Carroza is located in the rural area outside Alhaurin el Grande and you don't need to go further than the upper terrace to see many species resident to Andalucia. Watching kestrels and booted eagles training their young in late spring never ceases to fascinate. Other regular visitors include the beautiful bee-eaters, stonechats, little owls, goldfinch, hoopoes, great tits, blackcaps, swallows and swifts to name just a few.
