Out and About

Sight-seeing in the area
Alhaurin el Grande old town has pretty Andalucian streets and houses and excellent views of the valley from higher points of the town, such as the Ayuntamiento offices. The Tourist Information centre is just up from Bar Sardina - worth stopping for a tapas or two on the way! Near to Bar Sardina is the 'Casa de Cultura' where local artists often display their exhibitions.

Coin is in the other direction and in Centro La Trocha there is always a large Sunday market which is well worth a visit. There are fresh local vegetables and fruits, arts and crafts and a second hand section too. Afterwards you could enjoy an excellent lunch at La Parilla de Pepe on the opposite side of the road. At other times the small shopping mall offers a reasonable sized supermarket, Carrefour, a few shops and bars, a gym and sports centres as well as a small cinema.

Walkers and cyclists can use the 'senderismo' tracks in the pine woods to the South of Alhaurin el Grande, which is accessed via the ring road at El Chorro or at the BP garage near to Alhaurin Golf.

Mijas is a typical white village and caters very well for tourists. The Andalucian donkeys are a well known tourist attraction here.

Ardales lakes provide an inland alternative to a day at the beach, and 'El caminito del Rey' along the gorge is a must for those with a head for heights.

Malaga is full of the hustle and bustle of a city and the old part of town is definitely worth a visit and a small Moorish palace, Alcazaba, gives a hint of the Alhambra. There are museums, art galleries and the beautiful Cervantes Theatre hosts all sorts of events including jazz, rock and flamenco. John Schofield, Diana Krall and Harry Connick jnr have all played here!

For the kids, Tivoli World and Aquaparc in Fuengirola are a couple of ideas if they need a change from swimming! Benalmadena is full of tourist attractions, including a large marina with shops and activities located on the quaysides. Selwo Park near Estapona has numerous birds and animals - be prepared for a walk, or althernatively Fuengirola Zoo is a small but well run zoo and suitable for everyone. There are also cinemas showing films in English in Fuengirola, Malaga (Plaza Major) and Marbella.

If you fancy travelling further afield Ronda or Gibraltar are less than 2 hours away. In Gibraltar the Mediterranean Steps provide absolutely spectacular views towards Africa and along the Costa del Sol or you can hire a private luxury lunch and swim cruise on a catamaran and if you're lucky may spot several species of dolphin.
We recommend a car for your holiday, however there is a bus service to Malaga via Alhaurin el Grande, Alhaurin de la Torre, Fuengirola via Mijas and Coin, where another bus goes to Marbella. The link to bus timetable is here.
