Semana Santa - Easter Holy Week

Semana Santa starts this week - a serious fiesta where large and incredibly heavy extremely ornate floats are carried through the streets by many members of the church brotherhoods. The floats are called thrones -tronos - and each day, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, a different one depicts a scene from the Passion of Christ as he entered Jerusalem to his resurrection.
In Alhaurin el Grande there are two religious brotherhoods - the Greens and the Purples - and each will wear their traditional costumes of cloaks and pointed hoods, playing a distinctive rhythmic religious music which can be heard for the preceding month as they practice for this public event.
The pomp and solemn atmosphere is well worth visiting so if you are on holiday over Easter try to include a visit to one of the Easter Processions nearby.
